A prolific fraudster who has duped dozens of women out of thousands of pounds while using multiple false identities including that of an estate agent has been sentenced to four years prison at Liverpool Crown Court.
Stephen Davey, 49, pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud as well as other crimes after tricking two of his latest female victims out of more than £7,000.
The elaborate fraud saw Davey pose as a police officer, solicitor, probation worker, estate agent and a builder in order to complete the deception.
His plan to defraud the women started when he met one of them in a bar and then later profess his love for her before befriending one of the woman’s best friends.
Engagement ring
He then went on to separately persuade both women that he needed funds to furnish a property to live in, buy an engagement ring and pay for treatment after revealing that he had bowel cancer.
Davey used fake emails to persuade his victims that they were talking to different professionals who then backed up his stories.
His fraudulent campaign unravelled after he failed to pay a bill at a Liverpool hotel and suspicious staff tracked down his true identity online and alerted his victim, who subsequently called in the police.
“Stephen Davey is a manipulative and despicable individual who has knowingly preyed on extremely vulnerable victims,” Detective Constable Laura Gilbert, of Warrington CID told CheshireLive.
“He is a career criminal whose only motivation throughout was to extort as much money as he could from his victims.”
