Last night’s episode of Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlords on Channel 5 revealed an unusually shocking tale of a rogue letting agent who cost a landlord £15,000 in lost rent and eviction costs.
The episode highlighted the looming crisis facing the industry as the government moves to ban Section 21 notice evictions, which will make removing tenants from properties more difficult, it has been claimed.
Landlord Blaire Bartholomew from Wandsworth in London was followed by the programme after she was misled into renting her property by a fake letting agent, despite meeting and approving the tenant put forward to rent her flat.
Soon afterwards she was unable to contact the agent via its phone number, email or website and found that another tenant had moved in and was refusing to pay rent or leave the property, and that several other people were living at the address.
Fake letting agency
The programme filmed a fractious exchange between Bartholomew and the unidentified tenant who also claims to have been misled by the fake agency.
“Do you know how much it cost me to evict you? What you’ve done is despicable, I’m done,” she shouts during the filmed exchanges outside the flat.
“’You have ruined my life with this. I offered you help to find a place, I offered to pay your deposit, and you were the most aggressive, and awful person to me.”
During the programme it is also revealed that she had to sell her car to pay for the evictions process.
