At Symonds & Sampson’s first June auction in Sherborne, Dorset, 15 lots went under the hammer. Auctioneer Mark Lewis said, “We had a great mix of commercial properties, building plots, development opportunities and land throughout Dorset and South Somerset but one lot was a stand out.

“Hayden Farm at Charminster Dorchester had been in the Miles family for many generations and after the death of Olive Miles, at the age of 97, the farmhouse, buildings and 10 acres were offered for sale. “I have been into many houses but Hayden Farm was one of the most special. It is Grade II listed but with well-proportioned light rooms with good ceiling heights. It has great presence and stature, overlooking its own land and Olive fed scraps to her pet trout in the River Cerne which runs down the boundary of the land before joining the Frome.”

Richard Taylor, partner added, “We marketed with a guide of £575,000 and this was quickly exceeded in the sale room and after 83 bids the hammer fell at £848,000 resulting in a round of applause from the assembled crowd.”
