It probably won’t have Rightmove investors quaking in their boots, but Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has launched his own property portal.

Called Homes for Londoners it enables people to search for affordable homes to buy in the capital and lists 1,400 shared ownership properties and 230 Help to Buy homes.

These are all properties directly funded through City Hall’s affordable housing programmes which last year helped prompt 12,526 affordable homes starts in London last year.

Approximately half of these are to be affordable homes to buy while the other half are to be let out at social rent levels, and Khan says the portal will soon offer these properties as well.

The portal operates in a similar way to Rightmove, Zoopla and OTM. Users can register to receive email alerts for the latest properties in their area, check their eligibility and book viewings. It also has a ‘featured properties’ functionality highlighting units available from different developers who’ve built homes via the mayor’s funding programme.

Those buying through the portal will also be offered deals on mortgages and conveyancing services.

The Mayor’s office says the portal launch is only the first phase, and that later versions will include below-market rental properties as well.

“The Homes for Londoners website is a fantastic one-stop shop, bringing together affordable homes into one place for people who would struggle to buy in the open market. More and more homes will be added to the portal, so I urge Londoners to get online, set up a free account, and start browsing.”
